Question Tuesday: Is Christmas Necessary?

Today in staff meeting we kicked around the question considered by the following article: Is Christmas Necessary?

I know what I think. What do you all think?

(You probably want to at least scan the article to get a context for the question.)

  1. Joshua says:

No, it’s not, but it’s here. And more significantly, I think my life is enriched by participating in it, including economically, traditionally and religiously. I’m definitely of the camp though that tends to decry the holiday for its traditional excesses, particularly its music and ideological conflict (do we really need another series on the mythical war on Christmas?), more so than as a consuming circus or religious hegemony. (That said… love Advent.). And of the three, the holiday is primarily a traditional holiday for myself. I appreciate the focus on the Incarnation, but I don’t think it’s the reason for the season, and don’t feel guilty for not trying to force it to be so. It’s an important aspect, and I don’t wanna diminish its significance, but I don’t wanna put a holiday on a pedestal either.
